The Centers for Disease Control reports that there are roughly 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries or “TBIs” in the U.S. each year. Brain injuries often occur during car accidents, but can be caused by almost any bump, blow or jolt to the head – or a penetrating head injury that cracks the skull or disrupts regular brain function.
It’s commonly assumed that any traumatic brain injury is catastrophic and leads to long-term, permanent impairments, or death. While this may be true in many brain injury cases, it isn’t always the case. Concussions are an example of a mild form of brain injury that often leads only to a temporary impairment and thus would not qualify an applicant for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits.
Brain Injury Side Effects
A more traumatic brain injury may produce a multitude of side effects that limit an individual’s ability to work or carry out his or her daily routine. In some instances, compromised cognitive function and spatial reasoning skills could lead to:
- Loss of memory
- Change in personality or confusion
- Compromised language, reasoning or understanding
- Inability to walk or continue normal motor functions
